The first three Sundays of each month we host the best of local jazz, the second Sunday being an Open Jazz Session run by John Walter or Tom Unwin. On fourth Sundays we showcase talents in various genres, local or touring, on our Not Quite Jazz (NQJ) nights. See listings below or check out our monthly flyer page.
5th DAVE HOLLAND GOES SOLO
Inimitable, stylish, king of the hawaiian shirt and master of the keyboard.
A special event! Jay Darwish, one of the most sought after bassists in London and a Dartington College alumnus, is in Devon and teaming up with our local jazz guitar hero, Neil Burns and the great Coach York on drums. Jay has worked with Sting, Van Morrison, Imelda May, Anderson Paak, Newton Faulkner and Mica Paris, to name a few. He released his debut album ‘Reclamation’ in 2018 to top reviews, it made the Evening Standard’s album of the week and was featured on Jamie Cullum’s radio show. He is currently writing new material for release later in 2019.
19th Annika Skoogh Trio
Talented jazz vocalist Annika, with Tom Ball and Jim Rintoul. One of our favourites.
26th Trio of Men (Seachange fringe gig)
It’s Not Quite Jazz night and on the last night of the Seachange festival we welcome back Trio of Men, Municipal Song Makers from Torbay. Quirky, humorous storytellers through song featuring Hugh Nankivell – keyboards, Steve Sowden – guitar and loops, Ben Ballard – Percussive hitting things and all on vocals. Recently been making songs in care homes, hospitals, schools, in fields and orchards and in libraries, bus shelters and with a community choir in Torbay ‘The Choral Engineers’. Sometimes you can dance, sometimes you can try, but find that you don’t have seven legs. Glorious asymmetric rhythms, strange headgear, mis-spent harmonies and the joy of living. Played in the last few years at WOMAD, End Of The Road and Cornbury Festivals and looking forward to a return to The Bay Horse.
3rd “Sam at 70” – JazzLab plays music and poetry by Sam Richards
One of a series of special gigs, this one will feature Sam’s own compositions. With David George on bass and Steve Crossen on drums, Sam will be on keys and vocals.
